It’s alive!
Enough already with the high-tech toothbrushes!
Look - I’m as thrilled as anyone to be living in an era of such swift, constant technological progress. These are extraordinary times, and our quality of life has been enhanced in almost every particular by the diligence and vision of nerds who are dedicated to improving — and, indeed, perfecting — virtually every aspect of contemporary life. Here’s to them (hoist beverage of choice)!
But, quand mème — can we please have done with the continual pointless modification of the the toothbrush? Let’s just all agree that today’s toothbrushes are pretty damned near perfect and move on. A toothbrush is not a nuclear reactor or a sports car; it’s not even a radio or a microwave oven. It is, in fact, a toothbrush. Surely the engineers and designers who’ve been toiling towards the Platonic ideal of a toothbrush have come close enough to that ideal. Their work here is done. They can now move on in good conscience and devote their ingenuity to some other worthy goal. And the rest of us can all get on with brushing our teeth.
In love with Lynda
I am absolutely loving Lynda, the online training library that has hours and hours (actually, months and months) of video training courses for software applications and programming. I’m currently making my way through a 3 hour course in the essentials of HTML, and a 3.5 hour course in Final Cut. It’s not free, but at $25 dollars a month, or $250 a year, it’s about as good a deal as you’ll find in these days of exorbitant gas prices and tight credit.
Joshua Klein’s TED talk.
Joshua Klein’s an interesting character, his website is here.
This is his TED talk:
Lorem Whoopsum
As an html-challenged person who has been responsible for more than my fair share of posting f*ckups, it’s nice to know that even the pros screw up from time to time.
I came across this at the Apple store earlier today:
More W+K drooling
I sooo love the stuff Wieden+Kennedy is doing for Honda. This behind the scenes movie is to me like having a glimpse in the Wonka Chocolate factory.
Eat this youth-marketers!
Wow, these two jokes really hit the spot:
So this punk rocker is walking down the street when a guy asks him, “Hey, what exactly is punk rock?” So the punker kicks over a trash can and says, “That’s fucking punk rock!” So the guy kicks over a trash can and goes, “That’s punk rock?” The punker says, “No, that’s trendy.”
How many hipsters does it take to change a light bulb?
What, you don’t know?
Dutch awesomeness

Bike rack with built-in pump. Lovely.

What I did this weekend.
People that know me personally know that lately I’ve been having a B.O. problem. Because of our boiler being broke, but frankly that’s no excuse. I’ve called a plumber who was “gonna pass by asap, as soon as he’s got time”. I waited for a week, in fact, still no news from the guy, but after a week I took matters into my own hands. I sourced the exact same boiler second hand from somewhere in Holland for 40 Euros, nearly new.
Well, the “exact same boiler” turned out to be “nearly the exact same boiler” as it was set up for Natural gas, while we run on propane.
Now what to do?
Google it!
So after some clicking I found out that the only difference between the two is the size of the jets, so it came down to taking both apart and swapping the jets, which I did.
So what did I learn?
Well, about boilers and gas and jet sizes, but more importantly about how digital is affecting the economy.
We are not evolving to, but are already in, an era where it’s not about whether you know how to do something, but whether you know where to learn it.
I hope my plumber reads this.
Idiots.
This is a really good advert, it’s called “Idiots”
Apparently it’s a MTV video, so I presume it plays on MTV too. But what’s great here is the way they posted it on Youtube. The title is Idiots. Period. So when you start watching the video, you think you’re watching the idiots, but no, you reach the end and realize the idiots are the ones don’t take a cab and drink and drive. So how they posted it to youtube reinforces the premise of the ad. This is something that’s so often overlooked. The other end of the spectrum here are all the adverts posted to youtube that have the title “Viral Video #8″ or whatever.
It’s a small effort, yet a world of difference.
